Montreal's blue-collar union has filed a seven-day strike notice covering September 22-28, swallowing six of the eight days of the 2026 UCI Road World Championships — including both elite road races. The timing isn't incidental: with 200 million viewers expected worldwide, the union is turning the city's own broadcast into its leverage.
CUPE Local 301's roughly 6,000 members haven't seen a raise since their contract expired in December 2024, and the city's current offer would cut their purchasing power by about 10 percent. Union president Nicolas De Ciccio says the city "is still offering wage increases below inflation" and that blue-collar workers "deserve, at the very least, to be taken seriously at the negotiating table." This is already another work stoppage since February — but the first built to collide with a global stage the city can't reschedule.
