Tofik Beshir has spent 20 days in hospital after a head-on collision with a motor vehicle driver and has been moved to a Washington, D.C.-area hospital to be near family. Chris Merriam, founder and team manager of CXD Trek Bikes, says Beshir is "much more conscious" than the prior week and that there is "a long road ahead".
Beshir was training on a gravel road near Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, North Carolina, when he collided head-on with an automobile on October 8. He was airlifted to Johnson City Medical Center in Tennessee and was unconscious in the ICU. On October 21, coach Timothy Hall said in an Instagram update that Beshir had left the ICU and was responsive. Merriam told Cyclingnews: «I can say he is much more conscious than he has been the prior week. Having Tofik talk back, even with his raspy voice, is just wonderful. I'm looking forward to when he can say thank you to the world» The CXD Trek Bikes team has made "Tofik bracelets" and cards for Beshir, and more than half the elite field wore the bracelets on the first day of a race in Ohio, including Manon Bakker and Andrew Strohmeyer. A GoFundMe page started on October 9 had raised $142,157 as of the report.
