EF Education-EasyPost announced that Matt White has joined as a sports director for the 2027 season. EF dismissed him in January 2011 over a rider referral, and it now brings him back while Carapaz, Valgreen and Asgreen leave and Healy and Powless take the lead. The hire is a bet on a director's experience while the roster is rebuilt.
What this means
EF's 2027 sports director group now includes White alongside Wegelius, Vanmarcke and Southam. Its racing roster is changing around him, with Carapaz, Valgreen and Asgreen leaving.
White began directing at the team in 2008 and stayed three years, before a long stint at Jayco-AlUla. He left the team in January 2011 after referring rider Trent Lowe to former US Postal team doctor Luis Garcia del Moral for a VO2 max test in 2009. Jayco-AlUla dismissed him shortly before the 2025 Giro d'Italia, and he spent 2026 as Movistar's head of racing, where the team won the Vuelta a España 2026 through Enric Mas. At EF he joins a sports director group of Charly Wegelius, Ken Vanmarcke and Tom Southam. Carapaz broke his contract to join NSN, and Iván Sosa, Tao Geoghegan Hart and Lorenzo Milesi are among six confirmed additions. White says success next year means featuring throughout the season and getting results at the three Grand Tours and a lot of the Monuments.
