Enric Mas attacked with 10–12 kilometres left on Calar Alto and dropped both Roglič and Felix Gall, stretching his lead to 1:45. A three-time runner-up who never used to force the issue in a Grand Tour is now the one setting the terms — and with four summit finishes and a time trial still to come, he can't afford to stop.
Mas has finished top six at the Vuelta six times without ever really looking like a winner — his closest miss was 1:46 behind Simon Yates in 2018. He's now within a second of that exact margin, except this time he's the one holding it, not chasing it. Roglič is a four-time champion who is traditionally strong against the clock, and four more summit finishes remain. Movistar's stage 12 plan came off "exactly as we said on the bus," in Mas's words — proof of intent, not proof it's over.
