Ethan Hayter racing Stage 2 of the Vuelta a España 2026 in visibly cut and shredded shorts

Hayter cut his green jersey shorts open mid-stage at the Vuelta a España 2026 rather than abandon his bid for the red jersey — the race organisation had given him only an extra-small with no alternatives. He raced the breakaway in shredded kit and felt better for it.
The logistics failure was the organisation's: Hayter was handed an extra-small green jersey on Stage 2 with no spare, and the fit was cutting circulation in his legs. «It was like cutting the blood from my legs,» he said post-race. «It looked really silly but I was really suffering in the breakaway and I felt a lot better once I made some breathing room in my legs.» He prioritised keeping the leader's jersey on over switching back to Soudal-QuickStep kit — which tells you everything about where his head was.
