Josh Tarling returns to racing eight days after his brother Finlay was killed at the Volta a Portugal
Jim Cotton
Josh Tarling starts the Vuelta a España on August 22—eight days after his brother Finlay was killed by a van at the Volta a Portugal. This isn't a defiant statement. It's a harder question: what remains when a Grand Tour is the only place you know how to be.
Finlay Tarling, 19, died on stage 8 of the Volta a Portugal after a van drifted onto the course—spectators had assumed all riders had passed and let their guard down. Police weren't positioned nearby. No one broke the rules on purpose. And that's what makes the tragedy most unbearable. Finlay raced for NSN Development Team and finished third at the U23 British TT Championships in June 2026; Josh is a strong time trialist for Netcompany-Ineos, and the Vuelta holds two individual time trials ahead.
