Mike Woods gives a thumbs up on the podium as the best Canadian rider at the GP de Montreal
Matilda Price
Mike Woods is unretiring for exactly one race: the 2026 Worlds in Montreal. A hernia took his planned swansong there last September before surgery ever gave him the chance to say goodbye on his own terms.
Montreal is where Woods took bronze at the 2018 Worlds, the first Canadian men's road-race medal in 34 years — which is exactly why nowhere else would have pulled him back. «If the world championships were anywhere else but Montreal, I wouldn't be doing them» he said, calling it a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. He's spent the year racing gravel since walking away "bruised and disillusioned," and he's already ruled out any further road return once this race ends. One start line, one unfinished piece of business.
