New 2.1 race in Canary Islands to open 2027 UCI road calendar

The Vuelta Ciclista a Canarias, a new UCI 2.1 stage race, will run from 14 to 17 January 2027 across Gran Canaria and Tenerife. It will be the first-ever professional stage race in the Canary Islands, opening the 2027 UCI road calendar five days before the Santos Tour Down Under starts on 19 January. Both WorldTour and ProTeams will take part over four stages: a coastal stage, a medium-mountain stage, a high-mountain stage, and a final stage with a hilltop finish.
What this means
The Vuelta Ciclista a Canarias now opens the 2027 UCI road calendar, five days ahead of the Santos Tour Down Under.
The race will be organised by Canarias Eventos 360, which also runs the Vuelta Ciclista al Norte de Gran Canaria, a U23 race that returned to the calendar in July 2026 after a 17-year gap. It is the first new professional stage race created in Spain in four years. The Canary Islands sit more than 1,000 kilometres further south than the Spanish mainland and are known for their altitude training camps and comparatively warm off-season weather. More than 70% of professional teams already hold their pre-season training camps there. Eurosport will provide international broadcasting coverage of the race.
