Pogačar became the youngest rider to win five Tours — 27 years, 10 months, 5 days, nearly two years ahead of Merckx's pace. Asked about it in Paris, he joked he'd rather "get out of this club" than sit in it.
The record is real, but it's not what he's chasing. Months earlier in Benidorm he'd already said he'd trade a fifth Tour for a first Paris-Roubaix: "there is a bigger difference between zero and one than between four and five." Paris-Roubaix and Milan-San Remo are the two Monuments missing from his collection, and he's said finishing that set would make him feel "sort of complete" — a target that has nothing to do with Merckx's ledger.
