The UCI will require safer barriers at WorldTour race finishes starting in 2027. That's seven years after barriers folded apart and sent Fabio Jakobsen into a coma at the 2020 Tour de Pologne — and the mandate still only covers the final 500 metres of one race category.
Jakobsen was hitting 84 km/h when Dylan Groenewegen pushed him into barriers that simply gave way on impact. The UCI's response wasn't silence — it announced a "new standard" for barriers within months, back in December 2020 — but that standard came with no specifics and no deadline. Seven years later, the actual requirement arrives, and even then it rolls out progressively, WorldTour first, everyone else eventually. The gap between announcing a fix and enforcing one is the real story here, not the barrier itself.
