Vuelta a España Slammed For Influencer's Pogačar 'Pogachita' Viral Misfire
Jim Cotton
The Vuelta a España gave a 3-million-follower influencer backstage access and a microphone—and she used it to mock Pogačar to his face, calling him 'Pogachita' and asking why he hyperventilates when he sees her. This isn't a viral stunt gone sideways; it's what happens when race organizers confuse reach with editorial judgment.
Erola Jons was hired specifically to create content for the Vuelta a España 2026 and granted access to areas professional journalists cannot enter. After Pogačar won the Monaco time trial opener and took the red jersey, Jons approached him with remarks that left him visibly confused and uncomfortable. Eurosport presenter Laura Meseguer put the stakes plainly: «No one should have to put up with being treated like an object, nor women nor men»—adding that women in cycling have spent years fighting for credibility in the sport. The Vuelta had issued no response as of August 24, and it remains unclear whether Jons continues in the role.
