Matthew Richardson said on Tuesday that he will co-operate fully with the British Cycling investigation and will not comment further until the process is complete. UK Sport issued its own statement the same day supporting British Cycling's handling of the matter.
What this means
Richardson is out of the Shanghai Worlds, which run 14–18 October. Great Britain's men's sprint squad now relies on Harry Ledingham-Horn, Ed Lowe and Joe Truman. Richardson and British Cycling have both said they will not comment further while the process runs.
Richardson posted his statement on social media on Tuesday. It opens: «I understand the seriousness of what has been raised in recent reports about my withdrawal from the 2026 UCI Track Cycling World Championships.» He goes on: «I will co-operate fully with its processes. I assure everyone that I will do so properly, and appropriately and with contrition for the feelings of anyone who might be affected.» He explained his silence this way: «Out of fairness to everyone involved, and on advice, like British Cycling, I will not be commenting further until any process is complete.» He also said he was deeply disappointed to miss the World Championships. UK Sport said: «We support the seriousness with which British Cycling is treating this matter and it is essential that proper and fair process is followed.» The investigation was prompted by a complaint from another rider. On Monday British Cycling declined to give details and said it cannot share further information at this point. Richardson was sent home from the team's training base in China.
