Vuelta Ciclista a Canarias adds route and expansion plans

The 2018 Vuelta a España peloton

The Vuelta Ciclista a Canarias will split its four stages evenly: two in Gran Canaria on 14-15 January, two in Tenerife on 16-17 January, preceded by a team presentation day. All four are mass-start stages on relatively easy terrain, with no time trial on the program. Organisers also plan to eventually expand the race to six stages and bring in Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro.
The route confirms a coastal stage, a medium-mountain stage, a high-mountain stage and a final stage finishing on a hilltop, split two-and-two between the islands of Gran Canaria and Tenerife. A team presentation day precedes racing on 14 January. None of the four stages includes a time trial, with organisers describing the terrain as relatively easy throughout. Beyond WorldTour and ProTeams, invited Continental teams will also take part. Organisers have outlined plans to grow the race to six stages over time, progressively adding Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hieror to the current two-island format. An unnamed race organiser framed the project's appeal around the islands' climate: «We'll show people we can train in short sleeves all year round.»
