Colnago's G5-X is built on gravel's own numbers, not road's

Colnago introduces G-5X gravel racer
Escape Collective
Colnago has launched the G5-X, a new gravel bike built on the G4-X platform that debuted in 2024. Colnago says you can't just borrow road metrics — weight, stiffness, aerodynamics — and apply them to gravel, and the G5-X's numbers back that up: 53mm tyre clearance, a slacker 70.5–71.5° head angle, and a claimed 950g medium frame.
What this means
The G4-X's geometry had drawn on Colnago's V4Rs road bike; the G5-X instead works from gravel-specific numbers across clearance, geometry and layup.
Every change on the G5-X reads as gravel-specific rather than road-derived. Tyre clearance jumps 8mm over the G4-X, and Colnago frames wider rubber at lower pressure as rolling faster on uneven ground, with fewer pinch flats. Bottom bracket drop grows to 77.5–80mm from 70mm, wheelbase stretches to 1,044mm on a size 51, and the head angle slackens — all stability changes with no equivalent on a road frame. The seatpost switches from D-shaped to round 27.2mm, opening dropper-post compatibility, while the carbon layup is tuned to temper stiffness on rocky roads rather than maximize it as on a road bike. The frame itself drops to a claimed 950g despite all this, down from 1,050–1,120g on the G4-X, and the range-topping build weighs a claimed 7.2kg with 50mm tyres fitted — lighter than the previous G4-X ran with narrower 45mm rubber. Colnago frames the goal as a bike that "should do everything you need it to do, and nothing you don't."
