Izagirre breaks wrist, starts farewell race anyway
Ion Izagirre will start Il Lombardia 2026, his planned farewell race, eight days after fracturing his wrist in a training crash. Cofidis confirmed three days before the race that he would start before retiring. «I didn't want to end my sports career like that, so we will see each other on Saturday at Lombardy.»
What this means
Izagirre's career now ends at Il Lombardia as planned, not at a late substitute event, and not on the injury's terms.
The crash happened on a wet downhill during training, when Izagirre's back wheel slipped and he broke his wrist bracing his fall. He had been building toward this farewell on form: a win at Memorial Marco Pantani over Giulio Pellizzari was his second victory of the season, and in April he beat Quinn Simmons at the GP Miguel Indurain for his first. A dinner with Cofidis was already planned to close out the career after Lombardia. With the wrist broken, he looked at finishing instead at a cyclo-cross event in his home town of Ormaiztegi on October 25. He chose Bergamo anyway.
