Mount Royal was built to strip out one-dimensional riders. Voie Camillien-Houde is only 2.3 km at 6.2%, too mild for a pure climber to solo away, but eight repetitions are enough to burn off anyone waiting for a sprint. That leaves a wide coalition of climbers, Classics riders and puncheurs all with a legitimate reason to attack — and with no race radios and uneven national team depth, nobody has the means to police them.
The difficulty is loaded into the final 107 km, so the race stays coiled before it snaps loose on Mount Royal. Once a dangerous move goes on the last two laps, closing it becomes a question of which nation still has legs to spare — not which team owns the strongest engine, since trade-team hierarchies don't exist here. Demi Vollering arrives as the favourite off a Giro-Tour-Classics season, but her time trial form wobbled, and Magdeleine Vallières showed last year in Kigali how little that favourite tag guarantees on a course like this.
