World Champs: Vollering secures her white whale in spectacular fashion
Kit Nicholson
Niewiadoma-Phinney launched the sprint first, with 200 metres still to go. Then her leg locked up. Vollering's first world title came not from beating a rival's speed but from outlasting her rival's cramp.
Vollering had already blown one move that day, caught roughly 23km out after a solo attack, and had to rebuild the winning selection from scratch. Longo Borghini finished third, 4 seconds back, as Vollering and Niewiadoma-Phinney came to the line together before the cramp took hold. «I think I can still not believe it. I worked so hard towards this goal, and it takes guts to truly believe in it with your whole heart» — Vollering. A title she'd missed since a Glasgow silver and two seventh places arrived on the thinnest of margins.
