Seff Van Kerckhove was hit by a driver while training in Montreal, days before a road race he was favoured to contend for. That single crash does more to explain why this junior men's title is wide open than any startlist analysis.
Van Kerckhove finished third in last year's junior time trial worlds and now misses both races at Montreal entirely. With defending road race champion Harry Hudson having moved up out of the junior ranks, the field splits into regional blocs — Spain's Benjamín Noval, Denmark's Julius Løvstrup Birkedal, Britain's Leon Atkins — rather than settling behind one name. Noval arrives with 16 wins this season, but most came in Spanish national races, not against this kind of field.
