Widar beats Pidcock, Jorgenson as police bike hits two riders

Jarno Widar won Tre Valli Varesine on October 6 with a layback sprint finish in the final kilometre, beating Tom Pidcock and Matteo Jorgenson. During the race, a police motorbike driving against the direction of the peloton struck two Pinarello-Q36.5 riders, Marcel Camprubi and Thomas Gloag. Camprubi was able to continue racing, while Gloag abandoned and received stitches to his knee.
What this means
Thomas Gloag abandoned Tre Valli Varesine with stitches to his knee after the motorbike collision.
Widar, 20, rides for Lotto-Intermarché, and his sprint finish came ahead of Pidcock of Pinarello-Q36.5 and Jorgenson of Visma-Lease a Bike. Pidcock told Eurosport after the race that he initially wanted to stop racing when he saw the motorbike hit his teammates: «A police motorbike was going the wrong way down the course and crashed into two of our guys. So from this point... well, first of all I wanted to stop racing myself. I was mad. The guys all riding in front of me, for me, and two of them on the floor.» He added on their condition: «Luckily Marcel was ok, he could continue. Tom was also ok, in the end, but he stopped the race, and he has some stitches in the knee.» Pidcock said of the incident: «Things like this shouldn't happen.» The incident follows the August 2026 death of Finlay Tarling, a 19-year-old British professional cyclist struck by a non-race vehicle driving against the peloton at the Volta a Portugal, which had already increased focus on rider safety and vehicle traffic in races. Tre Valli Varesine serves as a tune-up for Il Lombardia.
